Carlos Alcaraz looked in trouble for quite a while during his match against
Emil Ruusuvuori at the
Madrid Open but the Spaniard rallied to win in three sets 2-6 6-4 6-2.
Ruusuvuori played a fantastic first set frustrating Alcaraz with both his serve and his groundstrokes. The Spaniard wasn't able to find a solution for that because he couldn't handle the sheer power the Finnish player brought behind his serve as well as the deep returns which caught him off guard a lot initially.
It was 6-2 for Ruusuvuori and he kept applying heavy pressure on Alcaraz at the start of the second set. Alcaraz was able to withstand that and raise his level which coincided with a small drop-off in the level of Ruusuvuori. It's a common problem for Emil as he can't keep this level for very long.
Alcaraz took the second set 6-4 and then completely smashed Ruusuuvori in the final set 6-2. A stellar comeback but also a reminder that he'll need to play well in order to win the event again. This was a bit shaky despite some incredible stats like 36 winners and 10 unforced errors.
