Tennis fans have been sharing their reactions to Carlos Alcaraz's participation fees and comparing them to those of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
The World No. 2 has rapidly become the leading figure among young tennis players, securing two Grand Slam titles at the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023. He has also claimed four Masters 1000 titles, which include the 2022 Miami Open and Indian Wells on hard courts, as well as the Madrid Open in 2022 and 2023.
Despite being just 19 years old, Alcaraz briefly held the World No. 1 ranking, breaking the previous record set by Lleyton Hewitt. Over the past year, he has engaged in a captivating intergenerational rivalry with Novak Djokovic.
Ahead of the ATP 500 Erste Bank Open in Vienna next week, the newspaper DerStandard hinted that the tournament was unwilling to meet the demands of the 20-year-old player. Supposedly, Alcaraz charges at least €750,000 for his participation. In response, the event organizer, Herwig Straka, seemed to favor focusing on player "density."
Nonetheless, the ATP 500 Vienna Open will feature five top-10 players, led by defending champion Daniil Medvedev (3rd), Jannik Sinner (4th), Andrey Rublev (6th), Stefanos Tsitsipas (7th), and Alexander Zverev (9th). On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz is listed among the participants for the Swiss Indoors Basel, which will take place during the same week.
Tennis enthusiasts took to Twitter to react to the news regarding Carlos Alcaraz's purported participation fees and shared their thoughts. Here are some of the fan reactions on X (former Twitter):

I remember when events were about winning trophies and points for your ranking not appearance fees. What a cancerous idea whoever started it long ago. This probably why we see really good players tank it in first rounds They get what they deserve I guess @atp & @wta need to…

I just don’t understand the whole concept of appearance fees in the first place. Like, isn’t it their job to play? What if they just got rid of appearance fees altogether? Would they just not play? This part of the business really irks me and idk if other sports have this

Carlos Alcaraz is not a target for the ATP Vienna because he asks for a $800K appearance fee 😨🫣 (via @derStandardat)

Alcaraz was very generous to only ask $800k, for someone with his stature, $5million should be bare minimum to step on Jannik Sinner's country. A man of the people indeed. In my opinion.

I think Carlitos is GREAT for tennis, but this is a bad look (it’s also not just him I know). Paying players these astronomical appearance fees only drives prices up for consumers. If we price the average fan out how are we growing the game???

750k for a 500 tournament while being the #1 seed, grand slam champion and top 2? doesn’t seem absurd tbh
