Tennis fans
have been sharing their reactions to
Carlos Alcaraz's participation fees and
comparing them to those of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
The World
No. 2 has rapidly become the leading figure among young tennis players,
securing two Grand Slam titles at the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023. He
has also claimed four Masters 1000 titles, which include the 2022 Miami Open
and Indian Wells on hard courts, as well as the Madrid Open in 2022 and 2023.
Despite
being just 19 years old, Alcaraz briefly held the World No. 1 ranking, breaking
the previous record set by Lleyton Hewitt. Over the past year, he has engaged
in a captivating intergenerational rivalry with Novak Djokovic.
Ahead of
the ATP 500 Erste Bank Open in Vienna next week, the newspaper DerStandard
hinted that the tournament was unwilling to meet the demands of the 20-year-old
player. Supposedly, Alcaraz charges at least €750,000 for his participation. In
response, the event organizer, Herwig Straka, seemed to favor focusing on
player "density."
Nonetheless,
the ATP 500
Vienna Open will feature five top-10 players, led by defending
champion Daniil Medvedev (3rd), Jannik Sinner (4th), Andrey Rublev (6th),
Stefanos Tsitsipas (7th), and Alexander Zverev (9th). On the other hand, Carlos
Alcaraz is listed among the participants for the Swiss Indoors Basel, which
will take place during the same week.
