Carlos Alcaraz put on a magnificent show on Wednesday night by defeating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 16 at Indian Wells. In this way, the player from Murcia continues to accumulate victories in California, where his record stands at 19 wins and only two defeats. In the quarterfinals he will play against the Argentinean Francisco Cerúndolo.
On a very windy day at the Tennis Garden, Carlos Alcaraz rounded off a brilliant performance against the experienced Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The match looked to be one of the most complicated for the Spaniard on his way to a three-time championship, taking into account the last history between the two players.
In 2024, Dimitrov surprised Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of Miami, where he defeated him 6-2, 6-4. According to Alcaraz himself, "I couldn't find a solution for him the whole match", referring to the level shown by his opponent.
This time it would be the former No. 1 who would demolish his opponent, keeping intact his dream of repeating the title in the fifth slam for the third consecutive time.
The winner of four Grand Slam titles played an almost perfect first set, where everything in his tennis flowed excellently. From the beginning, Alcaraz put pressure on his opponent's serve, breaking the Bulgarian's serve 3 times.
On the other hand, Alcaraz's work with his serve continues to pay off, as he did not give any break opportunity during the 38 minutes that the first set lasted, which would remain in the hands of Carlitos by a categorical 6-1.
Everything in Alcaraz's game worked perfectly, leaving one of the hardest hitters on the circuit with no options.
Dimitrov changed his approach at the beginning of the second set, taking more risks, trying to find some weakness in the Spaniard's game. This earned him the first break opportunities of the match, although he was unable to capitalize on them.
Alcaraz already had a break in his favor at that moment, and after frustrating his opponent's intentions, the Murcian seemed to be on his way to a new victory.
After breaking Dimitrov's serve once again, Alcaraz was ready to serve for the match 5-1, where he would not feel any kind of pressure, closing the match in a remarkable way with a resounding 6-1.
Carlitos has lost only 8 games so far in the tournament, a fact that reflects his absolute dominance and how good he feels playing in Indian Wells. Will he achieve the coveted three-time championship?
