Carlos Alcaraz (No. 2) defeated Lorenzo Musetti (No. 24) 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. The Spanish player extends his winning streak to 9 matches and moves closer to achieving the Sunshine Double.
The 2-times Grand Slam champion secured an early break and raced to a 2-0 lead on his serve. Alcaraz had a strong serving day, with a 71% first serve percentage and winning 80% of those points in the first set, giving Musetti few opportunities.
Alcaraz maintained his serve throughout the set without facing any break points and had several chances to secure a second break, which he did in the ninth game, taking the set 6-3. Alcaraz displayed the same confidence as in recent weeks, hitting 10 winners and making only 2 unforced errors compared to Musetti's 5 winners and 4 unforced errors.
The second set started evenly, with Musetti countering Alcaraz's serve better, but the first break came from the Spanish player's side, who went up 4-2. Musetti immediately broke back, but then failed to hold his serve, allowing Alcaraz to regain the lead.
A final service game from Alcaraz was enough to close out the match and continue his strong form in the American Masters 1000 events. His next challenge will be against the winner of the match between Hubert Hurkacz (No. 8) and Grigor Dimitrov (No. 11).
