Carlos Alcaraz gave
Tommy Paul a tennis masterclass, cruising into the semifinals of
Roland Garros by 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. The defending champion delivered his best performance of the tournament so far, sending a clear message to the other contenders that he's the favorite to retain his title after a stunning presentation.
The Spaniard was the favorite heading into the match, but few would have predicted he'd completely overpower the American like this. Alcaraz extends his winning streak to 11 consecutive matches and boasts a 20-1 record on the clay-court swing, setting up another highly anticipated clash against Lorenzo Musetti for a spot in the final.
First Set
The world No. 2 started the match strong; after a perfect first service game, he quickly put Paul under pressure on his serve. In a long game, the 22-year-old star secured the first break after four opportunities. But it was more than just a good start for Alcaraz, who hit 14 winners to his opponent's 5 throughout the set.
From the baseline, Alcaraz was strong, and he dominated with his serve. He won 58% of return points – particularly capitalizing on his opponent's second serves – and while winning his own service games with ease, he secured two more consecutive breaks to take the first set with a bagel: 6-0 in just 31 minutes, having conceded only one point on his serve.
Second Set
The American seemed to put a shaky start behind him by holding his service game for the first time at the beginning of the second set. But it was only a mirage of how the match was unfolding, as he couldn't win points easily on either his first or second serve. Alcaraz reasserted his dominance, securing two more consecutive breaks – and giving no chances on his own serve.
This time, the Spaniard needed only 24 minutes, taking advantage of his opponent's unforced errors and capitalizing on his serve to take a commanding 6-1 lead. In less than an hour, Alcaraz was already two sets up, having conceded just four points total on his serve, with five breaks in his opponent's six service games.
Third Set
Everything pointed to a crushing result, especially when Paul started the third set down 15-40. However, he didn't give up and managed to save five break points to start the set ahead. The American seemed to just be entering the match as he found greater efficiency on his serve and stayed level with Alcaraz.
The set unfolded more in line with pre-match expectations. Both players held their serves, and no break points were played for the majority of the set. However, when everything was tied at 4-4 and tensions rose, Alcaraz pulled out the best of his repertoire, once again creating break points and this time capitalizing on his opportunity to take the lead. He only needed to confirm his strong performance of the day with his serve, ultimately closing out the victory 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 in just one hour and 35 minutes.
In the semifinals, Alcaraz will face Lorenzo Musetti, whom he has already defeated in the Monte-Carlo Masters final and the Rome Open semifinals.
