Excitement in the tennis world reaches fever pitch with the announcement that young Spanish superstar
Carlos Alcaraz will join Team Europe at the next edition of the Laver Cup, to be held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin from September 20-22, 2024. With an impressive record of titles in his short career, Alcaraz is the choice of team captain Bjorn Borg to lead the rebirth of Team Europe at this prestigious event.
Carlos Alcaraz, champion of Wimbledon 2023 and US Open 2022, has emerged as one of the brightest talents in tennis in the last decade. At just 20 years old, he has won 12 ATP Tour singles titles, including two Grand Slams and four ATP Masters 1000 crowns.
His meteoric rise in the ATP rankings took him to No. 1 at the age of 19 in September 2022, making him the first teenager to achieve this feat. He is currently ranked No. 2 and remains an unstoppable force on both clay and hard courts.
Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg, who had previously led his team to victory in the first four editions of the Laver Cup, is determined to regain the prestigious title after suffering back-to-back defeats to the World Team in London in 2022 and Vancouver this year.
“I’m leaving no stone unturned for 2024,” said Borg. “The goal is to win and having Carlos commit to Team Europe’s cause is a thrilling start to what I anticipate will be an exceptional roster.”
The Laver Cup, named in honor of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, has become an iconic event in the tennis world. Over three days of competition, six of Europe's top men's tennis players team up to take on six of their counterparts from the rest of the world in a thrilling battle for supremacy. Rivals become teammates, creating a unique atmosphere of camaraderie and fierce competition.
This time, Berlin will become the epicenter of world tennis, with the Mercedes-Benz Arena as the main stage. The black court, which will be built especially for the Laver Cup, promises to provide an impressive visual spectacle that will capture the attention of fans from all over the world.
Carlos Alcaraz, who has never competed in Berlin nor visited the city, was excited about the opportunity to perform in front of the passionate local fans and explore the German capital for the first time.
“I appreciate Captain Borg’s confidence in me, and I look forward to teaming up with my rivals in both singles and doubles in Berlin,” he said. “It means a lot to represent Team Europe at Laver Cup, this is a great honor.”
“I will do whatever is asked of me to win back the Cup for Team Europe. I can’t wait to hear who will be joining me on the team next September.”
World Team captain
John McEnroe anticipates a tough battle in 2024 and is ready to defend the title after his team's back-to-back victories.
“I anticipate another tough battle,” he said. “Europe has many great players and has consistently been favored on paper. We’ll be ready for them though. We’ve tasted victory twice in a row and will put up a fight to hold onto the Laver Cup.”
