Carlos Alcaraz's brain is still broken from the Olympic Games says Rennae Stubbs after his outburst at the Cincinnati Open clouded his run towards the US Open.
Alcaraz smashed his racquet off the ground and was defeated by Gael Monfils last week in Cincinnati in a match he called the worst of his career so far. A poor display which gave no confidence ahead of Flushing Meadows.
But the ex-coach of Serena Williams believes there is an underlying reason for such an outburst which is down to the Olympic Games loss to Novak Djokovic. He was left in tears as he lost in the gold medal match in atie he was expected to win after his crushing Wimbledon final victory. The Serbian though achieved tennis destiny by sealing the gold medal and while he hasn't returned, Alcaraz played Cincinnati and limply lost.
"This was such an anomaly to see Carlos Alcaraz lose his mind like that. Our sweet little baby Carlitos, who is literally the nicest guy. I did a Q&A with all the players at Cincinnati and the question I asked every single guy was, 'Who's the happiest and most-liked person in the locker room?', and every single one of them either said Frances Tiafoe or Carlos Alcaraz," said Stubbs on her podcast.
"His brain is still broken from losing the gold medal. I think he's played a lot of tennis and he's got a lot of pressure on his shoulders now. I think he's tired now. Anyone who came off of playing at the Olympics and was playing in Cincinnati was just, mentally and physically drained."
