Casper Ruud survived a very exciting affair against Nicolas Jarry 6-2 3-6 6-3 in Seoul to move on to the quarterfinal.
A few days after watching Roger Federer retire from tennis, Casper Ruud touched down in South Korea's capital Seoul. Today he played the first match there and it went a bit tougher than most expected. Ruud was heavily favoured against a noted clay specialist Jarry but the Chilean actually gave him quite a battle.
A very focused Ruud jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and he cruised to a comfortable 6-2 finish. Some of that domination backfired for Ruud when he relaxed a bit too much. He had two break points at 1-1 in the second set to make a huge step toward victory but he failed to convert them and lost his serve in the next game.
That complicated things quite a bit as Jarry held firmly to win the second set 6-3. Ruud needed to up his game in the final set and like clockwork, he did just that. The world number two remained patient and waited for his chance and it came midway through. He served for the match at 5-3 and used his fourth to finish off the match.
