After a poor recent months and recent injury issues, Holger Rune has parted company with Patrick Mouratoglou in a move that has been mooted for some time.
Rune got back together with Mouratoglou for the third time back in February. They won their first ATP Masters 1000 title as a tandem back at the 2022 Paris Masters. But he couldn't reproduce that. He had been with Boris Becker and Severin Luthi in a bit of a dream team.
“Hello @pmouratoglou looking forward to new victories together with you and the team,” Rune posted on X, formerly known as Twitter at the time. “Sometimes you must try a variety of things to find out what works for you and what does not. In the recent months I have learned a lot about what’s important for me. With Patrick I did some of my greatest triumphs and I believe he can help me achieving my goals.”
But it seems very much like the old adage that Rune just can't find a coach who will dedicate all his time to just him. He currently has that though in the one cog that is remaining in Kenneth Carlson. A long time ally of Rune, he remains as his sole coach.
Whether he goes out and seeks another iteration to that team remains to be seen. Boris Becker himself mooted the split weeks ago and has been proven right. At the time Rune rubbished Becker's rumours telling him to text him instead of putting it on social media. But in the end, the legendary German will be right in the cold light of day. A player that certainly needs new direction, but will he get it?
“I have had some good talks with Patrick, and we mutually decided to part ways. He will always be a great friend, but for now, the best setup for me is to continue with Kenneth who will be present at all practices and tournaments. Nothing change in my relation to Mouratoglou academy who always have been very helpful to me. I am looking forward to being healthy and back on track again," said Rune on Instagram.
