Corentin Moutet was once again in the headlines at the Hamburg Open. The flamboyant Frenchman regularly finds himself at the centre of a talking point whether that is good or bad, In his straight sets defeat against Alejandro Davidivich Fokina, he opted to bizarrely pull down his shorts amid a series of outbursts on court.
The world number 32 had a tricky opening test in the final tournament before Roland Garros. He will be going into that event not in the best form with just three wins on clay in six tournaments competed in 2026.
He had his chances in the first set, squandering a whopping 11 break points while failing to save the one which came against him. This allowed the Spaniard to sail ahead. Moutet was not a happy man, throwing his racket into the wall at the baseline.
After another long rally in the first set which went the way of his opponent, Moutet opted for the interesting decision of pulling his shorts down in front of the whole crowd, merely out of frustration after another opportunity slipped by.
The crowd got a good laugh out of it, but Davidovich Fokina did not look his way. Determined to get the job done, he won the first set 6-4 before repeating that scoreline in the second set, against surviving a few break points to advance him into the second round where Alex de Minaur awaits.
However, the main talking point will once again be Moutet. A brilliant tennis player when at his absolute best, he does have a tendency for his mind to wander off and a vicious temper that he is not afraid to show off on the big stage. He will now look towards Roland Garros and beyond as he attempts to get back to form.
