The Chief Executive Officer of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters
David Massey has confirmed that Spain’s legendary tennis star
Rafael Nadal is
eager to play in the competition.
The 37-year-old has recently returned to the court after
spending nearly 12 months on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury. It
was because of this reason he ended up missing three out of four Grand Slams.
Nadal’s return did not go as planned as he was forced to
withdraw from the first Grand Slam of the year — the Australian Open — after
suffering a niggle in the Brisbane International.
Massey was recently quoted in a report where he confirmed
that Nadal’s entourage has reiterated that the player is eager to take part in
the mega-event.
"I spoke to his team and they confirmed that he wants
to play in Monte Carlo after taking part in Indian Wells,” he said. “We keep
our fingers crossed for his health but we hope and trust that he will be able
to come. He has already won the tournament 11 times and could be looking for a
twelfth triumph.”
Nadal is often regarded as one of the greatest players in
the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 22
Grand Slam titles.
Nadal has a fabulous
record while playing in the Monte Carlo Masters where he won the title 11 times.
The last of his title while playing in the competition came way back in 2017
when he defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the final with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
