Tommy Paul continued his title defence at the Dallas Open on Thursday during an upset filled day of action in America as Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton were felled as well as Frances Tiafoe. While Casper Ruud managed to remain one of the only top names left standing.

Paul seeded third defeated Ethan Quinn who is a close friend off the court 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the Quarter-Finals of the ATP 500. He served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and let four consecutive points slip after taking a 30-0 lead.

Quinn grabbed the next two games to force a decider but Paul avoided drama serving for the match at 5-4 in the final set instead of putting himself into unnecessary bother.

Up next for Paul is Reilly Opelka who battle past Cameron Norrie despite drama with the umpire 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 after hitting 18 aces during a two hour, 30 minute battle. He called Greg Allensworth the worst umpire and likely will be fined for his outburst on court.

While Fritz was ousted by Denis Shapovalov 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(2) to seal his first top 10 win ironically since defeating the American en route to the 2022 Vienna final. Fritz didn't commit a single unforced error through the first seven games. But the Canadian found his rhythm hitting 15 aces and saving seven out of nine break points he faced.

Shapovalov improved his Head to Head to 6-4 against Fritz and now meets sixth seed Tomas Machac. Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton both fell with the latter losing out to Jaume Munar 6-2, 7-6 in the Last 16. While Tiafoe won the first set 6-3 against Yoshihito Nishioka but was defeated in next two 6-4, 6-3 in favour of the Japanese ace.

Casper Ruud was perhaps the only top name alongside Paul who had any success as he eased past Michael Mmoh. He now faces Nishioka this evening. But in a tournament littered with American top talent, it is ironically only Paul that remains in the business end come Friday night.
