Matteo Berrettini wasted little time in sealing his ninth ATP Tour title on Sunday at the Swiss Open Gstaad as he dispatched Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-1 in just 59 minutes at the clay court ATP 250.
Berrettini sealed an opening break in the tie before the match was suspended for 30 minutes due to rain. When they returned to the court with the Italian leading 5-3, he won seven out of the next eight games to claim the trophy for the second time.
It continues Berrettini's resurgence with the Italian sealing his second ATP clay court title of the season. He also won in April in Marrakech and reached the final in Stuttgart losing out to Jack Draper in the end. But still despite that he sat outside of the world top 150 in March. Now he will return to the world's top 50 for the first time since August 2023 on Monday.
He faced three break points at 2-3 in the opening set and he found the big serves he needed to escape the danger. He broke Halys' serve in the next game and ultimately switched the match firmly in his favour. He won 90 percent of his points behind his first serve (26/29) as he capitalised on a drop in level after the rain delay.
“It seems like it was yesterday that I won my first title here six years ago. But, a lot of matches, a lot of things happened,” the 28-year-old said during his on-court interview.
“I’m just so glad that I can keep playing, keep enjoying. I think I found that energy of six years ago during this week. This place is special for me. I’m just so happy.”
"At the beginning, I was trying to figure out how to play because, during the whole week, the conditions were really different,” Berrettini added. "Every day was different. It was really windy and then we had a bit more wet. Then today it was really cold and and drizzling I was able to not get broken from Love 40. I think from there on I found the right energy. When we stopped, I came back on court, I was I found the perfect focus.”
