Daniil Medvedev plays an almost flawless match to beat Nick Kyrgios 7-6(1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a crazy Laver night session. Into R3 to face Botic Van de Zandschulp. [getty]
Daniil Medvedev survived a very engaged Nick Kyrgios in Melbourne by defeating him in four sets, 7-6(1) 6-4 4-6 6-2.
A blockbuster match was expected and while it was not fully that, it was a very entertaining affair that had many great rallies and points. Medvedev was the better player overall which is why he won the match but Kyrgios at times had really decent chances. The first set was decided by the 2nd serve. While both were dominant on the first, Kyrgios won only 4 of 15 on his 2nd serve and that was not good enough.
Even so, Medvedev was only able to find a breakthrough in the tiebreak. It was a dominant display with 7-1. The 2nd set was another interesting one. Medvedev was once again dominant on the first serve but Kyrgios was not as dominant on his. Medvedev never allowed a single break point while Kyrgios failed to save all three that he had.
It was enough for the 6-4 2nd set win. The 3rd set featured the best play from Kyrgios all day. The Australian went all out as he understood it was now or never. Producing some magic he was able to finally break Medvedev after several tries. He closed out the 3rd set with 6-4 but he could not replicate the same level in the next set.
Medvedev took control of the match and he easily cruised to a 6-2 finish. Kyrgios was also showing signs of fatigue as he in his own words does not train that much and it was seen. Medvedev easily cruised to a win and looks poised for another deep run at the event.
