Alexander Zverev looked very tired yesterday in his match against Ruud and he admitted as much during his post-match interview. The German expressed hope that he would be able to recover in time for the match yet his play today shows that he probably did not. From the start, it was evident that Zverev did not have the sharpness of previous days.
His movement was not quick and generally, his serving was below average as well. Medvedev smartly baited Zverev in long rallies simply sending the ball back rarely if ever attacking. At some points when he felt he had to Medvedev did raise his aggressiveness but for the most part, Medvedev was just waiting for Zverev to be the aggressor.
That proved a very successful tactic as Zverev would run out of steam rather quickly and look to shorten points. He had no clear vision on how to do that and committed a lot of errors. Whether it was from the baseline or at the net, Zverev simply did not have it. He lost the first set with 6-2 rather easily and something similar happened in the 2nd set as well.
Zverev was simply out of energy and by the time he suffered another loss of serve he kind of gave up. Medvedev played the best match since the US Open by far and it showed on the court. The fatigue did not help Zverev but tomorrow against Djokovic he will need a similar effort if he wants to win.
