The surgery came after Federer experienced a setback during active play on the grass season. Federer has always been adamant that his surgeries are not only motivated by his desire to continue playing tennis but also to maintain an active life after retirement. He always cited the importance of being able to do all the things he likes to do for many years after he hangs up the racquet.
That surgery effectively ended any hope of the Swiss ace playing at the Australian Open as knee surgies take a long time to heal but also to prepare for high-intensity activities like tennis. However renowned tennis coach Darren Cahill heard news of Federer playing at the event:
“There are so many great stories coming into the Australian Open. Roger (Federer) is apparently playing, I know he’s doing a lot of work on the court at the moment and we’re pretty sure he’s going to come down to play the Australian Open.”
It's a news that was not rather known in the tennis world and many tennis fans, especially Roger Federer fans welcomed it with disbelief and joy. Cahill also admitted that he is impressed with what Federer is doing at 40:
“At 40 years of age, the fact that he’s even doing what he’s doing is quite remarkable. He’s trying to get 21 (major titles).”
