Daniil Medvedev served for the match against
Alexander Zverev but he got broken only to break once more and then finish the super-close match off 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-5.
This was a very close match between the players and it was somewhat expected. Both of them played really so far and the conditions really gave Zverev a boost and Medvedev complained more than once about the court speed. He should be thankful that they played during the day because it gets a lot worse during the night.
The Russian lost the opening set after Medvedev produced a super solid level overall. He had 25 winners and served a bit better than Medvedev which proved the difference. The Russian also struggled to hit as many winners as he had hoped to have four less than his opponent. The second one was another close one that finished in a tiebreak.
Medvedev actually rolled his ankle in the second set and took a rather long medical timeout to get it taped. He opted to continue playing despite feeling pain in his ankle and he actually pulled out the second set in the tiebreak. He played a bit more aggressively with his serve doing the rest. The final set saw both players battle well.
Medvedev took a break and held it until the moment he needed to finish the match. He allowed himself to get broken in that game but then broke back again to go up 6-5. He then finally closed it out 7-5.
