Many expected Karolina Pliskova to continue her amazing play this week against Sakkari but it didn't quite happen as the Greek player rose on top in three sets 6-4 5-7 6-3.
It was an interesting match for Sakkari as she generally played really, better than Pliskova so this victory is deserved. The first set saw Sakkari dominate on her first serve largely without any problems. The second serve was a different story as she won only 2 of 11 points after she hit that but she spaced it out well facing only one break point.
She did get broken but she gave Pliskova far more trouble on her own serve creating 7 break chances and using two to win the set 6-4. The second set was played much better by Pliskova as her serve kept her afloat for much of the set. Pliskova took an early 3-1 lead but gave it back to Sakkari as the Greek player missed out on another break chance a few games later.
It was a great chance to win the match but she failed to convert it. The next game gave Pliskova a huge chance to break but she couldn't get it done. Not long after that Pliskova would again get set points after Sakkari committed 3 double faults in a row and this time around the Czech player forced a 3rd set.
Despite that, Sakkari remained composed and kept playing her game which worked once more as she took the final set 6-3 to book a place in the quarter-final. She played in the final last year.
