Daniil Medvedev passed the first
Paris Masters test confidently despite facing quite a bit of adversity against a very solid Ivashka 7-5 6-4.
The Belarussian tennis player is wrapping up a marvelous season for himself that saw him lift his maiden trophy as well as make great strides on the ATP Rankings. Tonight, however, he came out completely flat against Medvedev. The Russian was able to control the tempo of the match with ease and Ivashka looked shell-shocked early.
Medvedev went up 5-1 as Ivashka was simply all over the place hitting badly and being late on balls quite often. However, things turned around after Medvedev completely lost the compass for a good 15 minutes. The Russian went missing and Ivashka was able to win four games in a row and make it 5-5. Medvedev finally got the memo and reverted back to playing some decent tennis.
He broke Ivashka for the 6-5 lead and then closed it out with 7-5. His play got a little bit better but it was far away from the best stuff Medvedev had. Ivashka continued playing solid tennis overall but Medvedev was excellent. He defended very well and covered the court with ease allowing himself some great angles for his favored passing shots.
After securing an early break Medvedev was able to hold it rather easily thanks to some timely good serving. The Russian closed it out with 6-4 to move on and keep his year-end number one ranking alive. He will face Sebastian Korda next.
