After losing another
Australian Open final from a winning position, this time to
Jannik Sinner,
Daniil Medvedev may be experiencing some mental drawbacks, according to former player
Jelena Dokic.
Medvedev blew a two sets to love lead against Rafael Nadal at the 2022 Australian Open, as the legendary Spaniard fought back to win another Grand Slam title. The Russian had a second opportunity to win his first Australian Open in this year's final, but he squandered another two sets to love lead to Sinner, who escaped with his maiden Major trophy.
Both losses could be detrimental to Medvedev's mental state, says Dokic
While previewing the European clay court swing for the official Australian Open website, Dokic stated she believes both Australian Open final losses still weighed heavily on Medvedev's mind. However, she was of the opinion that the Russian should focus on his game and implement a new weapon to his arsenal, which could help him go over the line and win another Grand Slam.
"I think that there's a combination of running into great players (in finals) … (but) I think the fact he lost to [Jannik Sinner] and [Rafael Nadal] from two-sets-to-love up in Australian Open finals, I personally think it stays in your mind," said Dokic. "He can just keep going, he's like a wall. He does like to maneuver the ball around and even though he can be aggressive and has a big serve, he is comfortable playing the long points. I think to really finish off and win those Grand Slams, you’ve got to do it with weapons."
