The controversy between Chile and Belgium in the Davis Cup is nearing its resolution after the ITF confirmed that the Davis Cup group draw will take place on Thursday, March 6. Originally scheduled for February 20, the draw was postponed following a request from the Chilean Tennis Federation (FETECH).

In the first round of the Davis Cup Finals qualifiers, the match between Cristian Garin (Chile) and Zizou Bergs (Belgium) ended in controversy. Late in the match, Bergs accidentally collided with Garin, knocking him to the ground. Feeling attacked, Garin refused to continue playing.

The chair umpire only issued a warning to Bergs. Despite Chile’s protests, Garin was disqualified for not continuing the match, leading to Chile’s elimination (1-3) and Belgium’s progression to the next round.

Chile accepts draw but continues to push for Bergs' disqualification

FETECH recently agreed not to continue its request to suspend the draw after attending a preliminary hearing before the ITF Independent Panel. With Chile withdrawing its appeal, the draw will proceed this Thursday. However, Chile is still pushing for a retrospective disqualification of Bergs and a suspension from Davis Cup competitions.

Additionally, they are requesting the ITF to reconsider Chile's position in the Davis Cup, either by allowing a replay of the deciding match under fair conditions or granting them a compensatory wild card for the Davis Cup Finals.

For now, Chile will enter the World Group I draw as the 5th seed, while Belgium remains in the Finals qualification draw and will face Australia in the second round.

Possible opponents for the South American squad—including Alejandro Tabilo, Nicolás Jarry, and Cristian Garin—include Poland (Hubert Hurkacz), Norway (Casper Ruud), Bulgaria (Grigor Dimitrov), and Greece (Stefanos Tsitsipas).
