Alex De Minaur smashed Giron while Evans came back against Khachanov to reach the Antwerp
European Open semifinal.
Dan Evans overcame
Karen Khachanov in a spectacular match to reach the semifinal of the Antwerp European Open. It lasted over two and a half hours with the Brit winning 3-6 7-6(7) 6-4. The start of the match was better for Dan Evans who played better and generally was winning points easier. He failed to use the first break points and after that, it all turned around. Evans lost his own serve in the next game and Khachanvo went on to close out the match 6-3. Khachanov continued playing well in the next set taking an early break which he held for a long time.
Ultimately Evans came back to make it 4-4. In the end, it was settled in the tiebreak where Evans had to save a match point on Khachanov's serve to win which he did with 9-7. Visibly disappointed, Khachanov failed to win his first service game in the final set. It was the break Evans needed and he went on to hold it until the end of the match. It was a spectacular comeback from Evans who won deservedly.
Alex De Minaur had an easy going against Marcos Giron in his quarterfinal match as he defeated him in about an hour of play. Giron played very good tennis all week culminating in an impressive victory over Goffin yesterday but today he played very badly. De Minaur looked superb and served rather well which hasn't been the case this week. Alex has been very impressive on his 1st serve losing only one point but the key was several rallies in crucial moments where De Minaur was better.
The 2nd set was a destruction by De Minaur against a player who understood he was bested today and that his time was coming to an end. Giron tried several things in the 2nd set but Alex had an answer for all of it. The final result was 6-0 for the Australian who moves to his first semifinal in a very long time.
