Grigor Dimitrov had no issues in his
Roland Garros match while
Denis Shapovalov had plenty eventually losing the match and getting knocked out by Carballes Baena.
The Roland Garros draw determined that Grigor Dimitrov had to play against Andrej Martin and he played a very good match. The first set was a strong one from both players as neither Dimitrov nor Martin could find ways to break the serve of each other early on. Midway through the set, Grigor got a chance and he took it which was enough for the 1st set 6-4. The 2nd set was a much better set from Martin who even took the lead for a while.
His lead lasted a few games before Dimitrov pulled it back and since then we saw a tightly contested set. It ended up in the tiebreak and Dimitrov won it with 7-5. The final set was the easiest one from Dimitrov who won it 6-1. Martin gave everything he had in the previous set and tiredness caught up with him in the final one.
Denis Shapovalov played against Carballes Baena and he barely squeezed through the next round. He was down for the majority of the match with the Spaniard playing extremely well. He broke Shapovalov early to take a lead which he maintained through the set. He lost the lead late in the set but he broke Denis once more to win it 7-5.
Shapovalov took notice of his opponents play and played a much better set but he still almost lost it by losing his serve at 5-5. Carballes Baena served for the 2nd set but he failed to convey it and that lifted Shapovalov enough giving him confidence in the tiebreak which he won. The Spaniard wasn't discouraged much and he played a stunning 3rd set to win it 6-3 and takethe lead in the match once more.
The next one was the opposite as it was the Canadian who played better giving himself a chance in the match by winning the 4th set with 6-3. The final one opened slowly but midway through it was Shapovalov who took the lead 4-2. Shapovalov had the chance to end it at 5-4 but Carballes Baena broke him to make it 5-5. Shapovalov served for the match once more at 6-5 but once again he failed to end it.
That proved costly for him as the Spaniard full of confidence went on a 3 game stretch ultimately winning the set with 8-6. The marathon match lasted almost 5 hours being just 3 minutes shy of the 5-hour mark with Carballes Baena winning 7-5 6-7(5) 6-3 3-6 8-6.
