Former world number one
Lindsay Davenport believes that Serbia’s
legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic would have preferred winning an Olympic
gold medal over a calendar Grand Slam. The 37-year-old is regarded as the
greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the
Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic has gone through a rather disappointing. For the
first time in seven years, he failed to win a single major title. However,
despite all of that, Djokovic will remember 2024 for all the right reasons as recently
he completed his trophy cabinet after finally winning an Olympic gold medal for
his country. He defeated Spain’s young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz in the
final in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6. After that result, the
Belgrade-born star burst into tears on the court and was clearly emotional.
Former world number one Davenport was recently quoted in a
report where she was of the opinion that Djokovic would have definitely
preferred winning an Olympic gold medal over winning a Calendar Grand Slam. A
Career Grand Slam is completed when a player manages to win all four major
titles in a single year. As of now, only five players in the history of tennis have
managed to win Career Grand Slam.
“Big, but that’s
normal,” she said. “I was delighted when he won the gold medal in Paris. If you had asked him if he wanted Olympic gold or
all four Grand Slam tournaments, I am convinced he would have said gold. It is
without a doubt the best moment in the world of tennis this year. He wanted it
more than anyone else, more than anything in the world. And he did all this
after surgery and losing the final at Wimbledon. It just shows his greatness.”
