One of the coaches of Italy’s tennis star, Darren Cahill, revealed why victory in the US Open was a very special one. The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Sinner has been in the news recently, mostly for the wrong reasons. The reigning world number one in men’s tennis narrowly escaped a ban after testing positive for a banned substance in two doping tests. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), in a detailed statement, announced that they accepted the player’s counsel’s argument where they claimed the banned substance was positive in a minimal quantity in the player’s sample because of receiving a cream from one of the coaching staff members to overcome an injury.
Despite all those issues, Sinner has produced an incredible performance in New York where he managed to lift the US Open for the first time after beating America’s Taylor Fritz in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. One of his coaches, Cahill, was recently quoted in a report where he highlighted why that victory was a very special one. He further praised Sinner’s mental strength as well for producing the kind of results despite going through such a tough time in the recent past.
“The last 3/4 weeks, and the last 4 months, a lot of what has been going on in the team has been on my shoulders,” he said. “To try and keep a sense of things, to keep his focus on what we are trying to achieve, to continually tell him that he has done nothing wrong. So, whatever happens, he should hold his head high because he has done nothing wrong, and let’s go about seeing what we can do with his team during this period. It wasn’t without a lot of stress, there was a lot of stress. Even before the final I told him that the way he has behaved in the last few weeks has shown honesty and resilience, he must be very proud of himself.”
