Due to some
ATP Rankings methodology,
Novak Djokovic could find himself back in number one after the Indian Wells.
Russian
Daniil Medvedev is guaranteed at least three weeks at world
No. 1 despite his loss to Rafael Nadal Friday night in the semifinals in
Acapulco. The 26-year-old Russian will officially ascend to world No. 1 on Monday after Novak Djokovic was upset in Dubai on Thursday by Jiri Vesely.
Medvedev will have a 150-point lead on Djokovic going into Indian
Wells (8,615 to 8,465 points) and is ensured at least three weeks at No.
1 (Weeks of February 28, March 7 and March 14), per the ATP. On March 21, Medvedev will drop 250 points from his 2021 Marseille
title. Therefore, Djokovic could reclaim the No. 1 ranking on March 21,
depending on the Indian Wells results.
Because he’s unvaccinated against Covid-19, however, Djokovic’s status for Indian Wells (and Miami) remains in doubt. He confirmed that in Dubai saying:
“As of today, (no). I can't go – can't enter United States. As of today I'm not able to play. But let's see what happens. I mean, maybe things change in the next few weeks.”
