Djokovic managed to win the Australian Open final against Dominic Thiem 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4, however, during the last game of the 2nd set, Djokovic received two time violations from the umpire. As the rules specify that if you receive a second violation during the same game you lose your first serve.
A direct consequence of that was that Djokovic served a very weak 2nd serve. He lost the point, the game, and the set. While walking back he sarcastically tapped the umpire on the foot telling him: “You’ve made yourself famous today. Well done, man.” You can read about the whole incident here.
At the press conference after the match, Djokovic was asked about the incident with the umpire and his point of view. The Serbian said: "I thought that the second violation was not necessary. The first one, fine no problem. The second one, just not necessary under the circumstances we were experiencing. In my opinion, the chair umpire could have reacted a little bit better. These kinds of things switch the momentum of the match and it was a really important game," Djokovic continued.
"I didn't know that it is completely forbidden to touch the umpire. I thought it was a nice friendly touch (laughs). It wasn't aggressive. I just couldn't believe I got time violation, it kind of disturbed me. Verbally, we did have some exchanges, but no insults. If I did insult him, I would get a warning. I wanna thank him for not giving me a warning for touching him."
