Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic has registered an unwarranted record after the defeat in the final of
Wimbledon 2023.
The 36-year-old
was on the losing side in the grand finale of the third Grand Slam of the year
against Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in London on Sunday with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
After that result, Djokovic is now the player with the most
defeats (12) in the final of the Grand Slams, overtaking Switzerland’s former
world number one
Roger Federer who suffered 11 defeats in the final of the
majors in 31 appearances.
That defeat not
only gave the current world number two that unwarranted record but also
halted his march towards equaling Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles,
at least for the next 12 months.
As of now, Djokovic
is the joint second-most successful player in the history of the competition,
having won it seven times, equal with America’s Pete Sampras.
Despite that
result, the Belgrade-born remains the most successful in the history of men’s
singles tennis in the Open era, having won 23 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic will now
be hoping to return to winning ways when he will take the field where his last
title was way back in the 2018 edition where he defeated Argentina’s Juan
Martín del Potro in the final with a score of 6–3, 7–6(7–4), 6–3.
