Former World No.1 Andy Roddick fired back at a user on social media who instructed the retired tennis pro to stick to deviate from commenting on social topics and stick strictly to tennis.
The American's tennis career spanned from 2000 to 2012, with the American winning 32 ATP singles titles including a Grand Slam at the 2003 US Open. Furthermore, he reached the pinnacle of the sport, claiming the World No.1 ranking for a total of 13 weeks.
Following his retirement, Roddick remains involved in the tennis community as he serves as an analyst and occasional commentator. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the American is active on Twitter. He recently came across a tweet by Matt Maddock, Michigan State Representative, who posted pictures of some buses parked near a Detroit airport and claimed they were carrying illegal immigrants.
"Happening right now. Three buses just loaded up with illegal invaders at Detroit Metro. Anyone have any idea where they’re headed with their police escort," wrote Maddock.
However, it turned out the buses were carrying members of the Gonzaga University basketball team. With Maddock's claim proven false, Roddick responded on Twitter.
"This has been viewed 3.7 million times. Many of whom have accepted this as fact ……. It was the Gonzaga basketball team. It was a college basketball team. Not “three buses loaded up w illegal invaders….. with a police escort," wrote the former World No.1.
Roddick's response received mixed reactions, with a particular Twitter user urging the American to stay out of politics.
"Stick to Tennis Andy. no one cares bout your political agenda," the user wrote.
This prompted Roddick to hit back, addressing the anonymous user directly.
"So if I am supposed to stick to tennis, does that mean people can’t comment on sports," wrote Roddick.
