Dominic Thiem had a slow start against
Laslo Djere but the Austrian fought back to win the second set 7-6(3) and then the final one 6-4 to move on in Tel Aviv.
Thiem travelled to Israel to continue his slow return to form and he started off well although it was anything but easy. The Austrian recently played in a challenger event in France reaching the final but losing to Ug o Humbert easily in two sets.
This one started off badly as well as the Serbian jumped out to a 3-1 lead early but slowly Thiem was able to battle back and make it 4-4. He then had a chance to go up but lost focus again with Djere closing out the first set 7-5.
The second set was much better by Thiem who was in rhythm by now and he jumped out to a 4-1 lead. After that, we saw him complicate things far more than he need to with Djere battling back to 4-4. He was then forced to play a tiebreak but he proved better in the tiebreak 7-3.
The final set opened with Djere playing a bad game early and Thiem was able to secure the break. The Serbian played much better after that but Theim was able to outlast him and close out the match 6-4. A good win for Thiem albeit harder than he would have liked.
