Dominic Thiem defeated Hugo Gaston in Gstaad 1-6, 6-3 and 7-6 to record another impressive victory as he continues his comeback.
In Salzburg two weeks Dominic Thiem defeated fellow countryman Filip Misolic to earn his first victory back from the injury. The victory provided him with the assurance to do well the following week in Bastad. as well. He played well in Sweden but lost to Sebastian Baez who outplayed him in that matchup.
The Austrian opened today's match with some early struggles and it looked very similar to his Bastad round one against Emil Ruusuvuori. 6-1 was the score for Gaston who dominated a very erratic Thiem who was unable to hit his serve properly and that was a huge problem.
He was able to do that in the following set and generally play at a higher level which gave him the confidence to continue working towards the comeback win. An early break helped Thiem tremendously who cruised to a 6-3 2nd set finish. The final set featured a proper battle between the players as neither allowed too much on serve.
We ended up in a tiebreak and there it was Gaston who had the advantage early but Thiem was able to battle back and make it 6-6. Gaston had a match point at 7-6 but Thiem would go on and win three points in a serve closing out the match 9-7.
