Dominic Thiem keeps on winning as the Austrian defeated Kyle Edmund 6-4 6-1 at the Madrid Open to send himself into the 2nd round where Tsitsipas waits.
Dominic Thiem has been picking up some wins lately and it's a very welcome sight after weeks of struggles. Being back on clay is good for him and Madrid generally has always been a really solid event for him. He made a few good runs here and this might be the start of another one. Somewhat lucky in the draw, Thiem faced Edmund who has returned from his injuries this year, but the Brit is far from the level that had him in the top 20 years ago.
Edmund put up a good fight in the first set holding his own for much of the first set. He even had break points in that opening set but eventually faltered towards the end as Thiem took it 6-4. The second set wasn't very good by the Brit as Thiem was able to apply a lot of pressure on him and he didn't handle it well.
Too many mistakes from Edmund but that's part of the process as he works his way back to top form. A good win for Thiem with Tsitsipas waiting in round two.
