Dominic Thiem was one of the big misses from the list when it came to
Wimbledon wildcards on Wednesday morning when the announcement was made in a Roland Garros type move from SW19 despite reports pointing to the contrary earlier this week.
Thiem was reported on social media as getting one of the wildcards for Wimbledon by journalists and with Thiem not even entering qualifying for the tournament, it seems he was hoping for a spot which hasn't come.
It is another tournament in which Thiem has been snubbed after the issues which surrounded Roland Garros where he was more of a big name to the tournament and the history of the event. Reaching the final multiple times and delivering classic wins, Thiem was forced to play qualifying in his final year which riled a lot of tennis fans.
It seems the AELTC have taken a different approach with the men than the women with the latter seeing a myriad of top former World No.1's confirmed in Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki as well as Emma Raducanu. But in the men's, it is headlined by Liam Broady as well as a spate of all Brits with the Ilkley champion also usually getting one. This means that it is very much unlikely that Thiem will figure in this conversation of getting the final spot as it likely will go elsewhere.
Milos Raonic was another who has had real grass court success in the past who was snubbed. He was entered into qualifying though unlike Thiem. Simona Halep was the big miss in the women's draw but the former World No.1 reportedly didn't request a wildcard due to injury worries so seemingly wants to get right again before attempting to continue her return to the tour. There is one wildcard left on each tour but it seems Thiem will again have to sit out a Grand Slam in his last year.
