World no. 3
Dominic Thiem takes nothing away from his US Open crown, although he would love to beat
Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal and
Novak Djokovic and claim more Major titles.
The Austrian lost the first three Major finals against the most formidable rivals before he finally went all the way at the US Open last year. Novak Djokovic suffered the first career default against Pablo Carreno Busta while Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were not in the draw, leaving Thiem as the main favorite for the trophy. Still, the Austrian had to work hard to get there, trailing two sets to love against Alexander Zverev in the title match before performing one of the most incredible escapes in Major finals (Zverev served for the title in the decider) and prevailing in five sets.
While considering his title fully legit, Dominic would love to beat one of three greatest rivals en route to more Major titles in the future. He lost two Roland Garros title matches to Rafael Nadal in 2018 and 2019 and the one in Melbourne last year to Novak Djokovic in five sets.
"Would the title have meant more if I could have beaten one of the big three on the way? A Major victory is a Major victory. Otherwise, one would have to say that all the titles before the Big 3 are worthless. But of course, I still want to win a title where I can beat one or maybe two of them," Dominic Thiem said.
