Daniil Medvedev had a heated exchange with the chair umpire during his elimination from the
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The Russian squandered four match points before falling to Dutchman
Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-7[7-9], 5-7.
However, it wasn't the result that caught everyone's attention but rather the tense moment Medvedev had with chair umpire Adel Nour. After losing the second set, Medvedev engaged in a conversationâwhich was initially unclearâthat led the umpire to issue him a warning.
Medvedevâs frustration grew after receiving the code violation, and he immediately confronted the umpire.
Medvedev: âFor what?â the Russian exclaimed angrily.
Nour: âYou know what you said to me,â responded Nour.
Medvedev: âYouâre very soft, huh? Very soft,â added the former US Open champion. âWhat is this, double standards against Russians?â
Nour: "Donât say something like this. Daniil, Iâm very fair! I treat you all exactly the same.â
The 29-year-old eventually lost the match in visible frustration, smashed his racket, and left the court without shaking the umpireâs hand.
Medvedev once again exited a tournament earlier than expected, reaching only the quarterfinals. He now holds an 8-5 record for the season and has yet to win more than two consecutive matches this year.
Three of those losses came against players who werenât even ranked inside the top 90 at the time. This time, he fell to world No. 47 Griekspoor, who advanced to the Dubai semifinals, where he awaits the winner between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini.
