Dan Evans will start his Roland Garros quest on Sunday when he takes on the tricky Serbian, Miomir Kecmanovic but the British No.1 had comments from Dominic Thiem on his mind pre-tournament.
Speaking to Der Standard in April, Thiem spoke about specific players naming Evans benefiting from not having the lure of temptations during bubble scenarios over the past year.
"There are guys for whom life in the bubble is probably an advantage, for example Dan Evans or Alexander Bublik," said the US Open champion.
"They have problems focusing on sport in normal times. It's great for them - they concentrate exclusively on tennis, there is nothing else."
But Evans takes issue with those comments saying this lifestyle change predates the pandemic and that it was a 'strange comment' by the Austrian.
‘I travel with my girlfriend every week. It’s not like you can go out partying with your girlfriend every week. It’s not that I was on my own and single and going nuts when there weren’t bubbles. It’s a strange comment, isn’t it?," said Evans.
"According to him, I must be out a lot, partying a lot. I'm doing all right outside of the bubble too."
"I'm sure it was meant in the nicest way possible, but I would say Dominic Thiem has done pretty well in the bubble himself, as he won his first Grand Slam in a bubble."
