After destroying the competition at the 2024
ATP Finals in Turin,
Jannik Sinner remains the man to beat heading into the 2025 season. The Italian's dominant display at the elite event took everyone by surprise, including former World No.1
Jim Courier.
Sinner cruised through the round robin stage of the season-ending tournament, not dropping a set as he brushed past the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz and Alex De Minaur. The World No.1 would then defeat Casper Ruud in the semifinals, before again dispatching of Fritz to take home the trophy, without dropping a set during the entire tournament.
Courier impressed by Sinner's ruthless efficiency
Now serving as an analyst for The Tennis Channel, the four-time Grand Slam champion was at a loss for words following Sinner's victory in front of his home crowd. Courier believes that only Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, who was dealing with an ailment during the tournament, could have posed a threat to a red-hot Sinner during his run in Turin.
"Everyone else was just cannon fodder for what Sinner was bringing this week," said Courier. "And when his serve was as accurate as Andy [Roddick]’s that was bananas, to see how many of his serves were within one foot of the line. Half of them, that’s impossible to stop. The guy served over 70% first serves in play, obviously, he is going to win if he’s playing like that."
Sinner finished the 2024 season as the year-end World No.1, during which he captured two Grand Slam titles, the Australian Open and the US Open. The 23-year old won eight titles in 2024, and reached at least the quarterfinals at every event.
