Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to progress past the first round of the 2023 Rolex Paris Masters, winning the match 7-6 (3), 6-4.
The Canadian player has had a difficult season but pulled off an impressive run at the Swiss Indoors Basel last week, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final to defend his title.
The match was closely contested to begin with, as Struff successfully fended off a break point from the World No. 19. From there, the two players continued to hold until a tiebreak was required to decide the first set.
Auger-Aliassime took a resounding 6-0 lead in the tiebreak, giving him six set points. However, Struff was not done fighting back yet, and brought it to 6-3, causing his opponent began to start to look worried.
However, Auger-Aliassime was able to close out the set successfully, putting him ahead. In the second set, both players held until the 23-year-old was leading 3-2 on serve. It was then that he found himself with a break point that he secured with an ace.
From there, Auger-Aliassime was able to stay ahead until he could serve for the match, building up three match points and successfully converting the second one to book his spot in the next round.
Auger-Aliassime will face seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round at the ATP 1000 tournament.
