Taylor Fritz is into the Last 16 at the 2023
Madrid Open after prevailing over Cristian Garin in straight sets on Monday evening 6-1, 7-6(3).
Fritz is into this position of the draw for the first time in Madrid but has now reached the last 16 in all Masters 1000 tournaments so far this year underlining his credentials as one of the most consistent players in men's tennis.
Sealing it in a tiebreak after a dominant opening set, Fritz claimed it on his second match point with an ace down the line that was unreturnable by the Chilean.
But it could have been a lot easier for Fritz who only lost three points on serve until 6-1, 5-4. He lost four to get broken when serving for the match.
He followed that up with a double fault when down break point and weas sent to a tiebreak instead of sealing the match there and then but kept his cool to seal it in the end. He awaits either Cameron Norrie or Zhizhen Zhang tomorrrow.
