Frances Tiafoe deserves huge credit for fronting up to answer these questions regarding the example he knows he’s setting for young kids. And indeed, “four consecutive matches and four consecutive time violations is insane”.
Frances Tiafoe apologised after his outburst at the umpire at the Shanghai Masters, but it seems like his discontentment at the time violation rules has continued to the Vienna Open.
Tiafoe edged out Cameron Norrie 6-4, 7-6(4) in the opening round at the ATP 500 tournament in Austria. Thanks to automatic shot clock rules that have been in place since the Asian Swing, he received a time violation in the opening set.
He confronted the umpire and the supervisor was also called. After winning the first set, he shouted 'let's go' leading to a code violation. He previously had an issue with the umpire in Shanghai in which he shouted f*** you constantly having received a few time violations. This saw a side to Tiafoe which is rare to see given his fan friendly image.
After his win over Norrie, he condemned the shot clock rule saying that he had received violations in four straight matches. As well as Tiafoe, others have lamented such a rule being in place. "We put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears out here. And for me to play four consecutive matches and get four consecutive time violations is insane," he said in his on-court interview.
"It needs to be spoken about. Because then I also lost points; lost money; lost opportunities; fines that come with that – because of reaction," Tiafoe continued.
"I’ll deal with it better when they make a change, right? I think the more I kinda go on with it, I don’t think any change will happen. Me getting four time violations in four matches is pretty ridiculous to me. I’ve been on tour ten years and that’s never happened. So I just want to know why."
Certainly an issue that has continued. Especially with the addition of umpires making these decisions which also blighted Etcheverry v Shelton on Tuesday.
