Alexander Bublik has reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, overcoming world No. 5
Jack Draper with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory. The Kazakh had never gone past the second round at
Roland Garros, and despite his aversion to clay courts, he achieved one of the best results of his career.
Until now, Bublik only had two wins against top-5 players, both on hardcourts. This time against Draper, he secured his best Grand Slam performance and now awaits his next opponent from the clash between Jannik Sinner (No. 1) and Andrey Rublev (No. 17).
First Set
While Draper initially appeared to be the heavy favorite, Bublik quickly showed he came out with the intention of winning. Both players held their serves comfortably for much of the set, with no break points played on either side until 5-5. However, the world No. 5 was the one putting more pressure on his opponent on return.
The Kazakh displayed his usual arsenal that managed to unsettle Draper several times, from drop shots to constant slices that prevented the Brit from taking control of rallies. With everything quite even, the first break point came in the 11th game, when Draper had a couple of good forehand responses. The Brit didn't let the opportunity slip, securing the break on his first chance, and then serving out the set 7-5.
Both had maintained over 75% effectiveness on first serve points, with an aggressive Bublik outperforming his opponent in winners (21 against 14), but errors cost him, with 11 compared to Draper's 5.
Jack Draper reached fourth round of Roland Garros for first time in his career.
Second Set
The second set quickly seemed to turn in Draper's favor after an opening break – his 4th consecutive game – suggesting the match was swinging towards the Brit. However, the Kazakh quickly reacted with a break back and leveled the match again. Bublik capitalized on the momentum to strengthen his serve, and to the crowd's perplexity, he secured a break in the 6th game. Bublik had won 5 of the previous 6 games, taking a lead that became insurmountable for his opponent.
Draper paid dearly for errors in just one game; despite great consistency throughout the set, he couldn't threaten his opponent's serve, and Bublik closed the set 6-3 on his second set point. The Kazakh once again showed that when his first serve is on, he's difficult to compete against, and reducing errors was key to leveling the match.
Third Set
With everything even at the start – both comfortably holding their first service games – Bublik struck again on return. Two consecutive breaks and excellent service games gave him a notable 5-1 lead, with the Kazakh growing increasingly confident that he could surprise the world No. 5.
These were the 27-year-old's best moments of tennis; he had never previously advanced past the second round at Roland Garros. Draper struggled whenever he played with his second serve, and Bublik's explosiveness became uncontrollable. The Kazakh's 17 winners against Draper's 8 winners ultimately tilted the set in Bublik's favor. He constantly played drop shots and approached the net to finish points with good effectiveness against a Draper who was forced to play a couple of meters behind the baseline. The set ended 6-2 in favor of Bublik, positioning him to go for the win.
Bublik had a record 4-6 in French Open before this edition.
Fourth Set
The nightmare continued for Draper – who had performed superbly in previous rounds without dropping sets – but couldn't find solutions to Bublik's serve. An opening break for the Kazakh put him up 2-0, and the big upset he was about to deliver seemed increasingly close.
Bublik managed the advantage well, and didn't offer much resistance on return, focusing his efforts on maintaining good serving numbers. Draper, for his part, stayed in rallies from the baseline, trying to contain an inspired Bublik. The Brit managed to hold his serve without difficulty, but he didn't trouble his opponent when it was his turn to return.
The moment of truth arrived when Bublik was serving at 5-4 for the win. At that point, Draper brought his best tennis but wasn't enough. After saving five break points, Bublik held his serve sealing a memorable 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory. He advances to the quarterfinals and climbs in the rankings to world No. 41. He will face the winner of the Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner match for a spot in the semifinals.
