As preparation goes for the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires which begins on Monday for Alexander Zverev, it couldn't have gone worse as his bags have ended up 15,000 km away from their intended destination.
Zverev won't be playing in the Middle East this year. Instead he is opting to play clay and will be wondering why he bothered already. He made the final of the French Open last year and will want to go one better after letting a lead slip against Carlos Alcaraz.
He will hope that some clay tennis in different climbs will give him the edge over his competition. He flew from Rome to play the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires where he is top seed. But his tennis bags didn't come with him and instead went to the Maldives.
Ironically Zverev holidayed in the Maldives prior to the Australian Open so they have headed to a familiar destination but he took to Instagram to share his bemusement at such an incident.
"Could anyone explain to me how on earth it is possible for me to fly from Rome to Buenos Aires but my bags instead of coming with me being send to the [Maldives]? I guess they need a vacation already," he wrote on his Instagram story.
He has a first round bye in Buenos Aires and he will face either Dusan Lajovic or Roberto Carballes Baena. Both are noted clay court specialists so it won't be a simple test by any means. He has Francisco Cerundolo on his side of the draw as well. Neither of those players will be easy but Zverev has had some of his best results on the surface so will fancy his chances.
In the bottom half is second seed Holger Rune. Joao Fonseca also plays the tournament. As a result it is a strong draw for the ATP 250 tournament. Albeit Zverev may have to play with different equipment and be severely hindered by this mishap.
