Anastasia Potapova is the champion at the Transylvania Open defeating Lucia Bronzetti in the final in Cluj-Napoca on Sunday afternoon in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in a pretty topsy turvy affair.

The top seed at the Transylvania Open, she lived up to her billing albeit after losing the opening set. In a run that saw her defeat Viktorija Golubic, Ella Seidel, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and finally Bronzetti, it is a third career title.

She led 4-2 in the opening set and looked to be cruising to the opener. But she let it slip in a sloppy end as she was broken and had break points to get it back but couldn't convert. It went the opposite way as Bronzetti found her way into the lead and took the set.

But the final two were all Potapova who broke twice for a 6-1 second in which she was hardly touched after the first two games on her serve. She then broke at 4-1 in the third in a protracted end as she took six break points to finally make it 4-1 before sealing it 6-2.

After openly admitting recently to turmoil off the court after her marriage to fellow pro Alexander Shevchenko broke down, she finished the last season back inside the top 40 and her 2025 has begun brighter. She now has a title to add.

“Despite everything, I clung onto the last bits of my sanity, walked out on the court and played matches, and I wasn’t even doing that bad," she said recently to Bolshe. "Of course, this year wasn’t as successful as the previous one. But considering the circumstances, this season game me much more than any previous season of my life.”

This after also failing to defend her Upper Austria Ladies Linz title which saw her lose to Karolina Muchova in the Quarter-Finals. So while it wasn't a disaster by any means, it wasn't particularly the tonic she needed but she adds the points to not think about dropping in the rankings further.

Albeit she won't now play in Doha next week. Unlike Karolina Pliskova who made the mad dash to make it to the tournament, Potapova has withdrawn with her match against Daria Kasatkina set initially for tomorrow.
