French veteran tennis player
Gael Monfils holds an
unfortunate record for most retirements among the active men’s players in the
circuit.
In a list that was recently published by a media outlet, the
37-year-old topped the charts with 24 retirements in his career. His first
retirement came way back in 2005.
Interestingly, Monfils only had three seasons in his entire
career where he did not retire from any match because of a fitness concern. Those
seasons were 2012, 2016 and 2021.
On the second spot on that unfortunate list features Japan’s
Kei Nishikori and Richard Gasquet with 18 retirements each.
Surprisingly, the current world number one Serbia’s
legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic is placed fifth on that list as he had to
retire 13 times in his career. He is equal in the fifth spot with Benoit Paire
and Mikhail Kukushkin.
Monfils has had a difficult start to the season where he was
knocked out of the Australian Open after losing in the second round to
Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4,
6-4.
He was then knocked out of the Open Sud DE France after
losing in the round of 32 to Italy’s Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-7, 6-3,
6-0.
