Novak Djokovic addressed the crowd and media following the 2026 Australian Open final, offering heartfelt thanks to his team, rivals, and fans in a reflective post-match interview.
Djokovic was defeated 6-2, 2-6, 3-6, 5-7 in favour of Carlos Alcaraz who picked up his Career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open to put himself into tennis folklore and albeit despite losing out, the 24-time Grand Slam champion as ever was in a reflective and humorous mood.
“Good evening, good evening everyone. Thank you, thank you,” Djokovic began. “First and foremost, congratulations to Carlos, an amazing tournament, an amazing couple of weeks.
"To your coach, your family, your team… what you’ve been doing, I think the best word to describe it is historic, legendary. So, congratulations, and I wish you the best of luck for the rest of your career. I mean, you’re so young, you have a lot of time, like myself. I’m sure we’ll be seeing each other many more times in the next 10 years.”
Turning his attention to his support network, Djokovic reflected on the challenges of his journey. “Well, I have to obviously thank my team for enduring me, first of all, and for giving me support. It hasn’t been smooth sailing, as it never is, but you guys are my rock in my corner.
"You’ve seen the worst and the best of me in the last, who knows how many years, but particularly in the last three weeks. I want to thank you, and this success is your success, of course.”

Acknowledges Nadal and uncertain future

He also acknowledged one of his longtime rivals, Rafael Nadal, who was in attendance. “Then I want to speak to the legendary Rafa, who is in the stands. Just a few word, obviously, it feels very weird to see you there and not here.
"But I just want to say it’s been an honour to share the court with you and to have you watching the finals here. It’s the first time for me, and it’s a bit of a strange feeling, but thank you for being present. Too many Spanish legends tonight, it felt like I was two against one. It wasn’t fair, but okay.”
Djokovic paused, reflecting on the unique experience of playing in front of the Australian crowd. “In the end, particularly over the last couple of matches, you guys gave me something I’ve never experienced in Australia—so much love, support, and positivity. It’s been incredible.
"I try to give you back with good tennis over the years. This has been my 21st, maybe 22nd year coming to Australia. Honestly, I always believe in myself, and I think that is something truly necessary when you’re playing at this level against incredible players like Carlos and Jannik over the last three days. But I must be very honest.
"I didn’t think I would be standing in a closing ceremony of a Grand Slam once again. I owe you my gratitude for pushing me forward throughout the last couple of weeks.”
Djokovic concluded his address with a note of humility and appreciation for the uncertainty of the future. “God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or twelve months, but it has been a great ride. I love you guys.”
With this heartfelt speech, Djokovic closed another chapter of a career that has been defined by resilience, passion, and historic achievements at the Australian Open.
