Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has stated
that never thought about becoming the oldest player to stay number one in the
ATP rankings. The 36-year-old is often regarded as the greatest player in the
history of men’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 24 Grand
Slam titles.
Djokovic recently achieved yet another milestone as he became
the oldest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category to
keep the number one spot in the ATP rankings. He overtook Switzerland’s Roger
Federer after keeping the top spot at the age of 36 years and 321 days.
The legendary tennis star, who is currently taking part in
the
Monte-Carlo Masters, was recently quoted in a report where he stated that
he never thought about having such a record in the early days of his career and
shared an interesting meeting with the doubles number one
Rohan Bopanna who is
the oldest in the doubles category to hold the top ranking.
“I mean, it’s nice. It’s great,” he said. I met Bopanna
yesterday who’s the oldest doubles #1 in history. He said we have a combined
age of 80. He does contribute to the 80 more than I do. But it’s fun. To still
compete at the highest level & be #1, age almost 37.
“It’s not something I was honestly dreaming of or planning
on or thinking would become reality. I think all the work and dedication to the
sport and to my body and staying fit is paying off. I’ve been able to maintain
the longevity and extend the career for years and years.”
