Nick Kyrgios talked about playing
Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final on Break Point noting that he played a really strong match but ultimately it wasn't enough.
Kyrgios took part in the first season of Break Point and in the second part which will premiere in June, Kyrgios is seen discussing his Wimbledon experience against Novak Djokovic. It was the best grand slam run of his career as he made it to the final of the event losing to Djokovic in three sets. He actually won the opening set and on that, Kyrgios said:
"I played lights out. I played the best first set I could
possibly have played. He’s so mentally in tune with everything. It’s a
great start, it’s exactly what I wanted."
Even so, Djokovic didn't get rattled as he kept playing his tennis fully believing in his ability to win the match. It's something that we've seen from Djokovic for many years now and on many surfaces. Something similar happened in the Alcaraz match recently. Djokovic always kept his composure:
"But I don’t want to be behind against Novak. He kept his
composure in certain moments when another player would have started to
panic. He didn’t show me."
Even though Kyrgios didn't win the trophy the run at Wimbledon was probbaly one of the best experiences he had in tennis. He saw himself being accepted by the wider tennis audience which felt nice for him. Especially since for a very long time he was considered the villain of tennis:
"Got that under my belt now, Wimbledon finalist. I
definitely feel more loved and more, like, appreciated. I felt like I
belonged there."
Being considered the villain was hard for Kyrgios because he hated it. In some ways the Wimbledon run saw him embraced whic is what he wanted.
