China’s tennis star
Zhizhen Zhang has created history in the
ongoing ATP 1000
Shanghai Masters event.
The 26-year-old defeated Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry
in the round of 64 clash with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
While doing so, Zhang became the first Chinese player to win
two consecutive matches in a Masters 1000 event.
He is now set to face off America’s Brandon Nakashima in the
round of 32 clash on Saturday.
Zhang will be hoping that his recent performances will help
him secure his maiden ATP title. The Shanghai-born has had a decent year where
for the first time in his career, he managed to play in the main round of all
the Grand Slams.
However, Zhang failed to qualify for the fourth round or
beyond in any of the events. His most notable contribution came in the French
Open and the US Open where he managed to play in the third round.
He was defeated by Norway’s Casper Ruud at Roland Garros in
the round of 32 with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
In New York, Zhang came second-best in the third-round fixture against Australia’s Rinky
Hijikata who emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to continue his journey in the competition.
