Roger
Federer's 2006 Wilson racket, signed by the Swiss, will be auctioned with a
starting bid of $10,000. The 20-times Grand Slam champion had the best season
of his career, and for many analysts and fans, it is considered the greatest
season in tennis history.
The former
tennis player's racket was stored for years in the Australian Tennis Museum as
part of the personal collection of the historic Australian tennis player Ken
Rosewell. Federer himself signed the grip and frame, which will be delivered
along with a 2006 photograph of Rosewell, Federer, and the legendary golfer
Tiger Woods, signed by both former tennis players.
The
decision to auction the racket was made after the closure of the Museum was
announced, and there will be a 14-day period to make an offer starting at
$10,000. Just a few months ago,
Novak Djokovic's racket with which he won the
2016 French Open was auctioned for $107,482, one of the highest amounts ever
obtained for a tennis item.
Also,
Rafael Nadal's racket from the 2007 French Open, where he defeated Federer in
the final, was sold for $118,000, second only to Nadal's racket from the 2022
Australian Open, which sold for $139,700.
Some
experts are already anticipating that the value of Federer's racket may surpass
both figures, considering that 2006 was probably the year when the Swiss
displayed his best tennis.
Incredible
2006 Season for Federer
The Swiss
player won 12 titles and reached the final of all four Grand Slam tournaments,
securing the titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
However, he fell in the final of the French Open to Nadal, marking his first
defeat in a major final.
In that
remarkable year, Federer finished with an incredible record of 92-4, with only
two players managing to defeat him: Nadal four times (three of them in clay
court finals) and the last loss coming at the hands of Andy Murray. His
earnings that year exceeded 8 million dollars.
