Holger Rune may not have had the best year at times on the court with his fortunes only really going on the upturn after teaming up with Boris Becker, but he certainly remained popular in his native Denmark during the year.

Rune took to his Instagram story to celebrate a breakthrough, albeit one where it was off the court instead of on it. Danish tabloid B.T. posted a list of the most Googled people in 2023 in Denmark and Rune topped the list beating out the likes of Taylor Swift and cyclist Jonas Vingegaard.

Indifferent season for Dane

The year of Rune saw the World No.8 struggle after Wimbledon. He was ill and injured after the grass court major and at times could barely make it out of the first round. This also included Rune returning it seemed too early to the Hopman Cup as a shell of himself.

But after ditching Patrick Mouratoglou first of all and bringing in Boris Becker, he went from strength to strength despite still having indifferent form at times in a good sign for him ahead of the 2024 season. He became the World No.4 in 2023, the highest rank achieved by a male Danish tennis player in ATP history.

He made the ATP Finals, but was eliminated after losses in a tough group with Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. But still the appeal remains in Denmark as seen by the rankings posted by BT as the top Googled sportsman and person in 2023.
